If you’re wondering what food to try in Gyeongju, Hwangnam Bread should definitely be on your list.
Known as one of the city’s most iconic local specialties, this traditional Korean bakery has been making red bean bread since 1939 and remains one of the most popular souvenir shops in Gyeongju.
During our recent trip, we visited the Hwangnam Bread Main Store before driving back to Busan, and it turned out to be the perfect way to end our journey.

Spacious Store with Convenient Parking

One thing that surprised me was how large the main store actually was.
There’s a spacious parking lot, making it easy for travelers arriving by car.
Even though we visited on a weekend, the line moved quickly, and the store was well organized despite the number of visitors.
It was clear that both locals and tourists regularly stop here before leaving Gyeongju.
A Bakery with More Than 80 Years of History

Hwangnam Bread has been a part of Gyeongju’s food culture since 1939.
It has become one of the city’s best-known traditional bakeries and was even selected as an official supplier for APEC 2025.
Many visitors stop here to buy gifts for family, friends, or coworkers before heading home.
If you’re looking for an authentic local souvenir, this is one of the best choices.
Watching the Bread Being Made

One of my favorite parts of visiting the main store was watching the bread being prepared behind the glass.
Seeing each piece carefully made and packaged gave the bakery a much more authentic feeling than simply buying bread from a supermarket.
It also made me appreciate why this bakery has remained popular for generations.
Prices

At the time of my visit:
- Single bread: ₩1,400
- Box of 20: ₩28,000
- Box of 30: ₩42,000
You can easily buy just one to try, or pick up a larger box if you’re planning to bring some home.
How Does Hwangnam Bread Taste?
Unlike many modern desserts, Hwangnam Bread is simple.
It has a soft, slightly chewy pastry filled with smooth red bean paste that’s mildly sweet rather than sugary.
The balanced sweetness makes it enjoyable even if you don’t usually eat sweet desserts.
It pairs especially well with coffee or traditional Korean tea.
Each piece is individually wrapped, making it convenient to carry while traveling or to give as a souvenir.
Is It Worth Visiting?

Absolutely.
Hwangnam Bread is more than just a bakery—it’s part of Gyeongju’s history and food culture.
Whether you’re looking for a traditional Korean snack, a local specialty, or a meaningful souvenir, the main store is well worth a visit.
If you’re planning a trip to Gyeongju, I recommend stopping by before heading home.
It’s a delicious way to end your journey.
