A Relaxing Weekend in Daejeon | Bakery, Japanese Hotel & Local Food

A Relaxing Weekend in Daejeon, South Korea
More Than Just a Stop Between Seoul and Busan
Many travelers pass through Daejeon without ever stopping.
Honestly, I almost did the same.
My original plan wasn’t even to travel to Daejeon—I was visiting nearby Cheongju first.
Since I had some free time afterward, I decided to spend one night in Daejeon.
Looking back, slowing down and exploring the city at my own pace turned out to be one of the best parts of the trip.
/ First Stop: Korea’s Most Famous Bakery

No visit to Daejeon feels complete without Seongsimdang Bakery.
People travel from all over Korea just to buy its famous bread, so I couldn’t leave without stopping by.
Even on a weekday afternoon, the bakery was packed with customers.
Instead of simply grabbing a few breads and leaving, I spent time exploring the huge selection before relaxing upstairs with coffee.
It was the perfect way to begin my weekend.
A Quiet Evening in Yuseong

After visiting the bakery, I headed to Yuseong, one of Daejeon’s most popular neighborhoods.
Instead of choosing a regular hotel, I booked a Japanese-inspired hotel that offered a peaceful atmosphere, a bathtub, and a surprisingly affordable late check-in package.
After a warm bath and a good night’s sleep, I completely forgot how tired I had been.

Dinner with a Local Friend
One of my favorite travel memories wasn’t a tourist attraction.
It was dinner with a friend who lives in Daejeon.
We met in Dunsan-dong, one of the city’s busiest neighborhoods, and enjoyed lamb skewers and spicy stir-fried dishes while catching up.
Sometimes the best travel experiences aren’t found in guidebooks—they happen around a dinner table.
Slow Travel Can Be the Best Travel
The next morning, I checked out early and continued my journey.
Although I only spent one night in Daejeon, I never felt rushed.
There were no packed itineraries or endless sightseeing lists.
Instead, I enjoyed good food, a comfortable hotel, and meaningful conversations.
That was more than enough.
Is Daejeon Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
If you’re expecting a city full of famous landmarks, Daejeon might surprise you.
Instead, it’s a city where you can slow down, enjoy incredible bakeries, cozy cafés, hot spring areas, and neighborhoods that locals actually spend time in.
Sometimes that’s exactly the kind of trip you need.

Final Thoughts
Before this trip, Daejeon was simply a city I passed through.
Now it’s somewhere I’d happily return to.
Not because of famous tourist attractions,
but because it reminded me that travel doesn’t always need to be busy.
Sometimes all you need is good bread, a comfortable hotel, and enough time to enjoy both.
