When most people think about Fukuoka, ramen and motsunabe usually come to mind first. However, one of the biggest surprises during my trip was how amazing the desserts were.

From luxury chocolate cafés in Tenjin to fresh strawberry crepes near Fukuoka Tower and beautifully packaged Japanese sweets, I found plenty of places worth visiting.

Here are five dessert spots that I personally visited during my 4-day trip to Fukuoka.

1. Jean-Paul Hévin – A Luxury Chocolate Café in Tenjin

Location: Iwataya Department Store (B2F), Tenjin

I visited this café while waiting for the Comme des Garçons store to open. Since the line was much longer than expected, I decided to grab a coffee nearby.

Jean-Paul Hévin is a famous French chocolate brand, and its café inside Iwataya Department Store offers a quiet atmosphere that’s perfect for taking a break after shopping.

We ordered coffee and tea, both served with handmade chocolates and small madeleines.

The chocolate wasn’t overly sweet and had a deep, rich flavor that made it feel truly premium.

Recommended for:

  • Coffee lovers
  • Chocolate lovers
  • Anyone shopping in Tenjin

2. Iwataya Department Store Food Hall

Location: B2F, Iwataya Main Store

If you’re looking for Japanese sweets or souvenirs, this is one of the best places in Fukuoka.

The basement food hall is packed with beautiful dessert shops selling:

  • Matcha desserts
  • Daifuku
  • Strawberry mochi
  • Traditional wagashi
  • Seasonal fruit desserts
  • Premium jelly gifts

Everything is beautifully packaged, making it an excellent place to buy gifts for family and friends.

My family bought several desserts to enjoy back at the hotel, and it became one of our favorite memories from the trip.

Fukuoka’s Famous Mentaiko French Bread

You’ll also find FukuTaro’s famous Mentaiko French Bread here.

Although I didn’t buy one because I’m not a huge fan of mentaiko, there was a constant line of customers waiting, which shows how popular it is among both locals and tourists.

3. Tea Way – Japanese Bubble Tea

Location: Iwataya Department Store B2

After hours of shopping, I wanted something refreshing.

Tea Way offers a wide variety of bubble tea flavors, including collagen tapioca drinks that are difficult to find outside Japan.

The tapioca pearls were chewy and the drinks tasted refreshing.

Personally, I still prefer Gong Cha in Korea, but Tea Way is definitely worth trying if you’d like to experience a Japanese-style bubble tea shop.

4. Fresh Strawberry Crepe Near Fukuoka Tower

After watching the sunset at Fukuoka Tower, we stopped by a small crepe shop before heading back to the hotel.

The most popular menu was the fresh strawberry crepe topped with soft-serve ice cream.

The strawberries were incredibly fresh and generously portioned, making it one of my favorite desserts during the trip.

Must Try

  • Fresh Strawberry Crepe
  • Soft Serve Crepe
  • Strawberry & Ice Cream Combination

If you’re planning to visit Fukuoka Tower, I highly recommend grabbing dessert here afterward.

5. CafeMitu – A Cozy Night Café

One thing I loved about Fukuoka was that many cafés stay open until late at night.

Cafe Mitu had a calm atmosphere, making it the perfect place to relax after a full day of sightseeing.

Our group ordered several desserts to share, including:

  • Matcha Kakigori
  • Melon Kakigori
  • Strawberry Parfait
  • Iced Coffee

The matcha shaved ice had a rich tea flavor with sweet red beans and chewy mochi, while the melon version was refreshing and perfect for the summer weather.

It was a wonderful place to end our final evening in Fukuoka.

Final Thoughts

Fukuoka is much more than just ramen.

If you have a sweet tooth, don’t miss these dessert spots during your trip.

My personal favorites were:

  • Jean-Paul Hévin for premium chocolate and coffee
  • Iwataya Food Hall for Japanese sweets and souvenirs
  • Tea Way for unique Japanese bubble tea
  • Fresh Strawberry Crepe near Fukuoka Tower
  • Cafe Mitu for a relaxing night café experience

If you’re planning a trip to Fukuoka, adding a few dessert stops to your itinerary is definitely worth it.
