One of the biggest questions when planning a trip to Fukuoka is:

Should you stay in Tenjin or Hakata?

After spending five days in Fukuoka, I found that choosing the right neighborhood can make your trip much easier and more enjoyable.

Here’s a simple guide to help you decide where to stay.

Why Location Matters

Fukuoka is a compact city with an excellent public transportation system.

Most visitors spend their time shopping, eating local food, visiting cafés, and exploring popular attractions.

Choosing accommodation near the places you’ll visit most can save both time and money.

Stay in Tenjin If…

Tenjin is the city’s shopping and entertainment district.

It’s perfect for travelers who enjoy:

  • Shopping at department stores and local boutiques
  • Cafés and dessert shops
  • Trendy restaurants
  • Walking around lively streets
  • Nightlife

During my trip, I stayed at CANDEO HOTELS Fukuoka Tenjin, and it was an excellent base for exploring the city.

Many popular attractions were within walking distance, making it easy to return to the hotel whenever we needed a break.

Pros

  • Great shopping
  • Countless restaurants
  • Easy walking
  • Plenty of cafés
  • Vibrant atmosphere

Stay in Hakata If…

Hakata is the city’s transportation hub.

It’s ideal if you:

  • Plan to take the Shinkansen
  • Have an early flight
  • Want quick airport access
  • Take day trips around Kyushu

Hakata Station is also connected to several shopping malls and restaurants, making it a convenient place to stay.

Pros

  • Excellent transportation
  • Close to the airport
  • Convenient for train travel
  • Family-friendly

My Recommendation

If it’s your first trip to Fukuoka, I would recommend staying in Tenjin.

Most of the city’s popular shopping streets, cafés, restaurants, and nightlife are nearby, and many places can be reached on foot.

If your trip focuses on sightseeing within Fukuoka, Tenjin offers the best balance of convenience and atmosphere.

However, if you plan to travel around Kyushu or catch an early morning train, Hakata is the better option.

Final Thoughts

Both Tenjin and Hakata are excellent places to stay.

You really can’t go wrong with either neighborhood.

For food lovers and shoppers, I recommend Tenjin.

For transportation and convenience, Hakata is the better choice.

No matter where you stay, Fukuoka is one of Japan’s easiest cities to explore, making it a fantastic destination for first-time visitors.

Happy travels!
