When people talk about must-try foods in Fukuoka, ramen usually gets all the attention.

But before my trip, there was one dish I was just as excited to try: unagi (grilled eel over rice).

After doing some research, one restaurant kept appearing everywhere — Yoshizuka Unagi, one of the oldest and most famous eel restaurants in Fukuoka.

With over a century of history and a reputation among both locals and tourists, I knew I had to visit.

The Wait Was Longer Than Expected

When we arrived, there was already a queue.

Apparently, that’s completely normal here.

Instead of standing around, we grabbed a waiting ticket and explored the surrounding area while waiting for our turn.

Honestly, this ended up becoming one of my favorite parts of the afternoon.

Exploring Kawabata Shopping Arcade

Just across the street from the restaurant is Kawabata Shopping Arcade, one of the oldest shopping streets in Fukuoka.

Compared to modern shopping districts like Tenjin, the atmosphere felt much more local.

There were traditional decorations, small family-owned shops, and plenty of Japanese everyday life happening around us.

If you’re visiting Yoshizuka Unagi and there’s a wait, I highly recommend taking a short walk through the arcade.

It gives you a different side of Fukuoka that many tourists miss.

The Matcha Shaved Ice That Saved the Day

It was a very hot summer afternoon, and while wandering through the arcade, we discovered a small dessert spot called Kawabata Zenzai Plaza.

We ended up ordering a large bowl of matcha shaved ice.

At first glance, it looked simple.

No fancy toppings.

No fruit.

No whipped cream.

But somehow it was incredibly satisfying.

The ice was finely shaved, the matcha flavor was rich, and it felt completely different from the modern Korean-style bingsu I’m used to.

Maybe it was the

Maybe it was the anticipation of the eel lunch.

Either way, it became one of the most memorable snacks from the entire trip.

Finally Inside Yoshizuka Unagi

When our number was called, we headed back to the restaurant.

The building itself felt traditional and elegant without being overly luxurious.

Inside, there was a sense of history that matched the restaurant’s reputation.

Many of the customers were Japanese locals, which always feels like a good sign when traveling.

The Unagi Experience

I ordered the classic unaju set.

The meal arrived in a beautiful lacquered box, and even before opening the lid, I was excited.

Once opened, perfectly glazed eel covered the rice underneath.

The first thing I noticed was how soft the eel was.

It practically melted apart with each bite.

The sauce was balanced and flavorful without being overly sweet or salty.

Compared to grilled eel dishes I’ve had in Korea, this version felt lighter and more refined.

Every element worked together beautifully, including the soup and side dishes served alongside it.

After the first few bites, I completely forgot about the waiting time.

Is Yoshizuka Unagi Worth Visiting?

Absolutely.

Yes, there may be a wait.

Yes, it’s more expensive than a bowl of ramen.

But if you’re looking for a classic Japanese dining experience in Fukuoka, Yoshizuka Unagi is worth the visit.

For me, it ended up being one of the most memorable meals of the trip.

Ramen was delicious.

Yakiniku was great.

But this traditional unagi meal felt uniquely Japanese in a way that stayed with me long after returning home.

If you’re visiting Fukuoka and want to try one truly special meal, Yoshizuka Unagi deserves a spot on your list.
